Located 764 kilometres north-east of Perth, Meekatharra is a remote outback town with a rich gold rush history and a strong connection to Western Australia’s pastoral and mining industries. Its name comes from the Yamatji phrase meaning “place of little water,” reflecting the arid beauty of the region.

 

History & Heritage

  • Settled in 1896 during the gold rush era
  • Once the northernmost point of the WA Government Railways system
  • Railway line closed and removed in the 1970s, but its legacy remains
